How to Surprise Your Girlfriend or Boyfriend

Surprises are like love itself: unpredictable and delightful. They can make an ordinary day intense and unforgettable. A surprise lets your girlfriend know that you are thoughtful, considerate, original and loving. It will give her bragging rights with her friends, her mom, and the rest of her family. It can transform a bad day. And it reassures her that she made the right choice when she fell for you.

Surprises don't have to cost money. They can be as simple as a small sign, composed on your computer and attached to the front door: The Most Wonderful Woman in the World Lives Here. Or a tiny sticky note, on her car's steering wheel: I love you.

The most endearing thing in the world is when one's love appreciates those things about ourselves that we are not sure we like. "I love it when you giggle at things." "I really adore your wild imagination." "Not everyone can shout for their team like that!"

Communicating to her can give her confidence and reassure her about the people who are important to you:

• I was telling my buddy how how much fun we have together.
• You really impressed my Mom!
• My family thinks you are wonderful. Everyone at the party loved you.

And then there are the special moments when you really want to surprise her: the birthdays, the anniversary of the day you first met, the evening you suggest you live together. Personalized gifts mean a great deal: a silver necklace with an engraved message proves you planned the gift carefully. A set of monogrammed linen with both your initials can a perfect gift for moving in together, if she's traditional.

But if your love is a renegade, recognize that and give her a gift card for her next tattoo, a carefully chosen spidery goth sweater, a translation of her favorite expatriate poet, or a guide to the world's undiscovered islands.

When you shop, look for little things that will delight your love. Save them for those really tough days when things are going wrong - to remind your sweet that something is going right. A tiny book of love poetry, a heart shaped stone, a small gift card to her favorite shop, a little basket of candies can lift her mood and make things easy again.

If you don't have the right gift on hand, think about an enhanced email: attached an mp3 file of a love song, a favorite poem, or a quote. The message can be simple: This made me think of you. I always do. or Let's take a quiet walk tonight. I want to know how your day is going.

Here's a dozen more ideas to surprise your girlfriend. Add your own ideas to the list.

1. Make a tray of appetizers, add candles, cloth napkins and wine or beer. Turn out the lights, light the candles and eat in a new part of your home… Try it in the bath, the garden, on the bed
2. Hide messages in your love's bag, coat pocket, or umbrella. Simple notes are nice, but you can also try pictures, hearts, or a favorite poem.
3. Call your sweetie's parents to tell them what a good job they did raising such an extraordinary person – you get points with everyone!
4. Make a paper-heart/flower petal trail from the doorstep to a surprise elsewhere in the house so your sweetie finds it when returning home. The surprise? Candy, a small present, flowers, you!
5. Surprise your girlfriend with some spontaneous erotic roleplaying games!
6. Find a book of love poems to read to each other.
7. Send a postcard or a love letter. Mail is always fun.
8. Cook a treat. Call your love's mother to ask about a favorite childhood recipe.
9. Hide a gift in the house and email a clue to your love.
10. Take your girlfriend on a surprise date to a place you both love.
11. You can let her know she is important to you by writing up a list of treasured moments in your relationship.
12. Put a message in a bottle and place it where your sweet will find it.

Surprises bring us closer to the people we love.
